"So what if we overpay? I've never regretted overpaying for great talent or a great asset." "They are right about almost everything," Zaslav said. Zaslav told The New York Times in a lengthy new profile that he has no regrets about the deal struck between studios and the Writers Guild of America for a new three-year contract on Sept. Discovery chief now says the demands made by striking writers were reasonable, though adds that scribes might now be overpaid. If the issue is not having money for advertising, why are they shotgun blasting Wonka, Aquaman 2, and The Color Purple next month within days of each other? What is going on?! lol Movies like this! It's just so shortsighted. 2024 is going to be a very lean year because of the production stoppage, they need moderately budgeted films that have the potential for a wider appeal. Paramount is eating out on Sonic sequels. We've had a ton of animation/live action hybrids that have succeeded since. So now Batman and Looney Tunes, the faces of your company as a brand, aren't distributable? I get that Back in Action bombed, but that was 20 years ago. And you're tossing it for $30M in tax breaks? They have a new Batman animated series, they sell it off to Amazon. But this is a $70M movie, not that expensive for a major studio. Honestly, what is Warner Bros even doing? I get that the streaming model is a bust and everybody is cutting back. This is where it becomes a film preservation issue. I don't care how good or bad a movie supposedly is, it doesn't deserve to be thrown into an incinerator, never to be seen. I hope the movie finding new distribution is true. But they weren't willing to take that risk. Its difficult to predict what will resonate with viewers. Or they can call it quits and get some of what they have spent back in tax credits. So they can either go ahead with finishing the movie, do marketing and release it and lose more money on top of what they have already spent. The studio has most likley taken a look at the shot footage and made the calculation that the expenditure on everything I just listed plus the marketing campaign and what they've already spent will be higher than what the movie will make in profit. There might be four hours of footage shot which needs to be edited into a cohesive, slim narrative. It's still missing the CGI effects, the animated sequences, the sound effects, the music, the editing. That merely means that all the live action sequences have been shot. They never finished the movie - there is no product to sell or put into the public domain. They didn't make a movie and then cancelled the release.
